In 2018, the Virginia General Assembly passed HB 793, a groundbreaking piece of legislation that allows Nurse Practitioners with 5 or more years of clinical experience (that is, 9,000 or more hours) to apply for autonomous practice licensure.
As NPs prepare to transition into autonomous practice - and perhaps open their own practices! - it is crucial that they receive reimbursement for the services that they render. Virginia House Bill 1640 and Senate Bill 1178, sponsored by Delegate Ransone and Senator Sturtevant respectively, would ensure that NPs are able to bill insurance directly through their National Provider Identifier (NPI) number. We would love for patients' and other constituents' voices to be included as part of our advocacy initiatives! Please ask your legislators to support our efforts by sending a letter to them today - and consider customizing our suggested message with your personal experiences and perspective.
