North Carolina’s Alcoholic Beverage laws were written before craft breweries even existed in our state. A team of NC legislators has filed a new bill designed to modernize ABC laws to support our state’s growing craft beer industry, instead of standing in the way. A small handful of companies - heavily influenced by international corporate beer - are loudly opposing the measure.
Please contact your state legislators and ask them to support this important legislation!
HB 500 (ABC Omnibus Legislation) has been significantly changed since it was introduced, however it will still take important steps to update our laws in support of craft brewers and home brewers, including:
- Bring taproom operations up to industry best practices;
- Allow sampling on the production side for sensory analysis and quality control;
- Harmonize with federal law allowing off-site storage when production outstrips warehouse space;
- Fill crowlers;
- Transport home brew for competitions and events, and more.
Independent craft brewers face a number of hurdles in North Carolina. This proposed overhaul of North Carolina’s ABC laws will help them grow and succeed.
North Carolina is home to more than 200 independent craft breweries across the state - the greatest number in the South. Outdated laws are holding many of our craft breweries back, but we have an opportunity to fix it.
Legislators need to hear from brewers and craft beer fans who support these meaningful measures - please stand with NC’s craft brewers and take action today!
