On December 8th, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors will be voting on a proposed $100 million financial assistance package to support our local, small businesses. This package could potentially include cash grants and loans for our small businesses, which can give them a fighting chance to survive this dark winter until we can safely reopen the economy again.
Now that Santa Clara County moved into the Purple Tier and most of the economy has been shut down, it is clear that small businesses are suffering from this crisis. According to a recent poll by Alignable, 33% of California small businesses and 38% of minority-owned businesses were unable to pay their November rent. The hardest hit industries are restaurants, beauty salons, retailers, fitness centers, and more.
Since there are no guarantees that we will see a significant stimulus package from the federal government to specifically support our local, small businesses, we must take action for a local assistance package from Santa Clara County. We must advocate for a financial assistance package that includes grants, loans, and maximum flexibility for small businesses of all stripes to qualify for this $100 million program.
